I
can’t really explain or dissect these drawings like they were a no
fail recipe for apple pie. There is no right or wrong way to look,
observe or respond to them. What I can do is at least think out loud
and share something of myself, my feelings and ideas in the
process….this is the creative journey…welcome.
These drawings
were taken from the hand held figurines that I made in the winter of
2005. These sculptures were a distant yet familiar memory of female
figurines created by ancient agricultural societies, also known as Terraphims. They would plant
Terraphims in the soil for the
promise of fertile land and abundant crops. From
these Paleolithic times feminine forms were found in the fields, temples, gathering places, tombs and ceremonial grounds where
initiation, fertility, birth and rebirth took place.
It somehow
seemed important to make them, shape them, let them reveal
themselves. It felt like I was picking up from where someone else
left off. In fact about 100 Terraphims and tools were made around
the time of winter solstice that year. Like winter seeds, deep
within the stillness, the darkness, the void, the psyche of the
collective feminine. Something was happening. My body also felt
like a seed, full of possibilities and potential. Seeds of
creation, creativity ready to be planted into fertile ground, ready
to take root like a winter seed. Sometimes this felt to me both
masculine and feminine. see drawing “Fertile Ground”.
A year
later
in 2006 I decided to take on the mammoth task of drawing all the
Terraphims that were made. I wanted to discover more about them.
How would I draw them? What environment would I put them in? What
feelings would stir whilst drawing them? And stir they did….They
reflect back at me feelings of power, presence, vulnerability and
surrender that comes just from looking at them. Taking the time to
really see them, like being a witness, you see “She cannot hide who
she is”. That’s what creativity does for me, it brings me the
truth, I find out about myself and about collective stories, images,
feelings and thoughts. The images reveal something, I see something,
I see myself, ... I cannot hide.
